One big difference between the ‘torchlight’ feature phones and what we call ‘smartphones’ like BlackBerry, iphone and Samsung S3 and other such brands is battery life.
There’s no way smartphones can match up with feature phones in this regard. Even the best batteries don’t have enough reserves to power big, bright screens, along with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and 3G.
However, by making a few changes to your phone’s settings (and maybe even changing the way you use your phone a little) you should be able to extend its battery life quite well. The aim here is to show you how to reduce your handset’s power consumption without making it unusable.
Here are eight ways you can boost your smartphone’s battery life.
Dim the screen brightness
Screen brightness is about the highest consumer of battery power. Most phones include an auto-brightness feature that automatically adjusts the screen’s brightness to suit ambient lighting levels. This mode uses less power than constantly running your screen at full brightness would. However, you can get far better results by reducing the brightness (under Settings/Options menu) to the lowest level you can tolerate Even if you do nothing else we suggest, following this one tip will extend the life of your battery dramatically.
Shorten the screen timeout
Screen time out is the amount of time the screen stays lit after receiving input. Under your phone’s display settings menu, you should find an option labeled ‘Screen Timeout’ or Backlight for BlackBerrys. Every second counts here, so set your timeout to the shortest available time. On most Android phones, the minimum is 15 seconds. If your screen timeout is currently set to two minutes, consider reducing that figure to 30 seconds or less. On a BlackBerry, the minimum you can set is 10 seconds.
Turn off Bluetooth
No matter how much you love using Bluetooth to transfer music or photos, once you are done, turn it off. Most phones ask for permission to switch on Bluetooth to send or receive a file, but will not turn it off automatically when done. By turning off the Bluetooth radio, you can add an hour or more to your phone’s battery life.
Turn off Wi-Fi
As with Bluetooth, your phone’s Wi-Fi radio is a serious battery drainer. While you will need to use your home or office Wi-Fi connection rather than 3G for internet access and other data services, there’s little point in leaving the Wi-Fi radio on when you’re out and about. Toggle it off when you go out the door, and turn it back on only when you plan to use data services within range of your Wi-Fi network. Look in the notifications area of you device to know if it’s on or not.
Don’t run apps in the background
Multitasking – the ability to run more than one application (app) at a time – is a powerful smartphone feature. It also burns a lot of energy, because every app you run uses a share of your phone’s processor cycles. By killing apps that you aren’t actually using, you can drastically reduce your CPU’s workload and cut down on its power consumption. For BlackBerry, press the Menu button and scroll to ‘Switch Application,’ a list of all running apps will show up. You can then select the ones not in use and close them. Sometimes, it’s worth closing all the apps and rebooting your phone from time to time as well.
Don’t use vibration only
Some people prefer to have their phone alert them to incoming calls by vibrating rather than playing a ringtone. Unfortunately, vibration uses much more power than playing a ringtone does. After all, a ringtone only has to make a tiny membrane in your phone’s speaker vibrate enough to produce sound. In contrast, the vibration motor rotates a small weight to make your whole phone shake. That process takes a lot more power. If you don’t want to be disturbed audibly, consider turning off all notifications and leave the phone in view so you can see when a new call is coming in. This approach is as courteous to your battery as it is to your friends and colleagues.
Switch from 3G to 2G
It is possible to switch Network Mode from 3G to 2G under Network and Connections Setting under Options menu for BlackBerry. Doing this can double battery power. The only implication is that download speeds are reduce when browsing. Everything else like calls, text messages and BBM, work just as fine under 2G setting.
Use Power-saving modes
Depending on your handset, you may find the manufacturer has provided power-saving features. Enabling this mode manages the phone’s various power-sapping features for you. It might, for example, prevent your apps from updating in the background, dim your screen, reduce the screen timeout setting, disable on-screen animations, and turn off vibration.
By default, this mode usually turns on when your battery level drops to 20 per cent, but you can set it to kick in at 30 per cent instead. And the sooner the phone switches to this power-saving mode, the longer its battery will last.
The 25-year-old looks set to leave los Blancos at the end of the season, with Juventus among the sides interested in buying him, and Jorge Higuain feels that the club let him down
Gonzalo Higuain has never been treated the way that he deserves at Real Madrid, according to the player’s father.
El Pipita has been at the club since 2007 but, with his future now likely to be elsewhere, Jorge Higuain expressed his views about his son’s time at the Santiago Bernabeu, including allegedly broken promises being made to the striker.
“For a year the club has promised a renewal of his contract,” the forward’s father told AS.
“There have been meetings with Jose Mourinho and Florentino Perez but nothing. In nine months there has never been a call and that was the straw that broke the camel’s back.
“In seven years the boy has never been protected as he deserves. He has behaved excellently but now enough is enough and he wants to leave.”
With regards to his next destination, Jorge says that he wants his son to join a club where he will feel loved.
He added: “Juventus and Arsenal have been in contact and he wants to go to a team in Europe where he is a main player and is shown affection.”
The former River Plate forward has scored an impressive 122 goals in 262 appearances for Madrid in all competitions.
Most women experience feminine issues from time to time. Unfortunately the fact that the issues are common doesn’t make them any less embarrassing. Feminine odor is especially frustrating, because it can leave you feeling unclean and gross, even if that’s not the case.
There are lots of causes for feminine odor. Below are the top five and their solutions…
Bacterial vaginosis
Bacterial vaginosis (BV) sounds like a big scary term, but it’s actually very common. In fact, BV is the most common cause of váginal odor, according to the Mayo Clinic.
What stress does to your body
Every vágina is filled with naturally occurring bacteria, and BV is simply an overgrowth of that bacteria. According to Mary M. Galenberg, M.D., OB-GYN for the Mayo Clinic, most women in their reproductive years will experience at least one case of BV. The cause is unknown, but unprotected s3x and frequent douching can put you at a higher risk. Other symptoms include itching, soreness and discharge.
Some cases of BV will go away on their own, but Planned Parenthood recommends that all women with BV symptoms visit their doctor for treatment to prevent rare but serious complications. Treatment for BV is usually as simple as a course of antibiotics.
Yeast infection
A yeast infection is also very common (and very uncomfortable!). They present much like BV, with the addition of a thick, white discharge. Yeast infections don’t require antibiotics and instead can be treated with one- or three-course váginal anti-fungal treatments. Your doctor may also recommend a one-time oral anti-fungal treatment.
Symptoms of a yeast infection
Treatment for yeast infections has become very simple and can even be purchased over-the-counter. Most of these treatments tend to get messy, so it’s better to use them overnight.
Galenberg recommends you visit your doctor if you are experiencing these symptoms but have never been diagnosed with a yeast infection, as well as if treatment doesn’t resolve the symptoms or you get four or more infections in one year.
Séxually transmitted diseases
Some STDs can cause feminine odor, the most common being chlamydia and gonorrhea. Both diseases are common and easy to treat, but can cause serious complications if they go untreated. Unfortunately, both are also often undiagnosed because they may or may not produce symptoms. The most common symptoms of chlamydia and gonorrhea include painful urination and puss-like discharge, although an unpleasant odor is often present as well. See your doctor immediately if you are experiencing any of these symptoms and avoid risk by abstaining or using protection during séx.
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) occurs when bacteria (usually séxually transmitted) travel through the vágina into the uterus. It is often a late-stage result of an undiagnosed STD, such as chlamydia. PID usually isn’t diagnosed until you experience chronic pain or have trouble getting pregnant because it often doesn’t have symptoms. If symptoms of PID do present, they may include pelvic pain, odor, heavy discharge, fever, fatigue, painful intárcourse or painful urination.
PID can often be treated with antibiotics, though it may leave behind scar tissue that has lasting effects. According to Galenberg, lasting effects might include chronic pain, infertility or ectopic pregnancies.
Poor feminine hygiene
It’s possible that the cause for your feminine odor may be nothing more than poor hygiene. We’ve got a lot of complicated parts down there, and caring for them isn’t always easy. Make sure you’re covering all your bases to keep your lady parts fresh and clean.
First and foremost, make sure you’re washing thoroughly every day. Women have oil and sweat glands in the váginal area that, while completely natural, can cause odor if not attended to. Use mild, fragrance-free soaps, because anything else can upset that sensitive area and lead to even more troubles. Make sure you wipe from front to back after using the restroom and wear clean underwear every day, even if you don’t have time to shower.
12 Must-haves for women’s health
There are a lot of products out there that claim to help with odor and keep our parts “presentable,” but stay away from them. Dou ches, sprays, cloths and creams all claim to help women achieve some sort of super-cleanliness, but they actually cause more problems than they solve.
Douches remove some of the bacteria that work to keep your vágina healthy, and scented products have been known to cause irritation.

The Super Eagles, put aside their jet lag to defeat Tahiti 6-1, in their opening game at the Confederations Cup.
Players and officials arrived Brazil just 36 hours before the game, but there were no signs of fatigue, as Elderson Echiejile’s opened scoring with a deflected effort, as early as the 5th minute.
Oduamadi doubled the lead five minutes later, with a composed finish from inside the box. Nigeria went into the break leading 3-0, after Oduamadi pounced on a goalkeeping error, to tap into an empty net.
Jonathan Tehau scored nine minutes into the interval, to spark wild celebrations among the crowd and the players. Efe Ambrose lost the player and he towered above the Celtic man, to thump in a corner kick.
Tehau then scored at the wrong end, to restore the Eagles’ three-goal advantage. Oduamadi made it 5-1, thanks to good work down the right from Brown Ideye, before Echiejile grabbed his brace with a low drive.
Stephen Keshi, will however be worried ahead of the matches against Uruguay and Spain, as his strikers had a bad day at the office against the minnows.
